WHAT IS HATHA YOGA?
The term HATHA YOGA is derived from the Sanskrit ha, meaning “sun,” and that, meaning “moon.” The Main Aim of Hatha Yoga is to unite the active and receptive qualities as represented by each celestial being. However, this is believed because Patanjali refers to the word “asana”, which contrary to the popular belief that this refers to yoga postures, the word actually means “to be seated in a rigid, amusing, and calm position”, which is ideal for meditation, not postures.
Yoga postures, while having many great benefits, is not what Patanjali was referring to in his sutras. Motionlessness will enable them to become aware of the inner energies in the body.
Popular thinking ‘in the West’, is that Hatha yoga is about to stabilize the body and mind. The ‘ha’ in the word “Hatha” represents the esoteric sun, and the ‘that’ represents the moon, and the practice of Hatha yoga aims to balance these two energies.
Most people think that doing asanas — bending the body into yoga poses — is the practice of hatha yoga. Reading it, one cannot fail to acknowledge that classical hatha yoga is not merely practicing asanas.
A point to remember is that while the word Hatha refers to stubbornness, it does not mean blind coercion or compulsion. Its easy convenience and focus on health and well being has allowed it to play an important role in counteracting the many negative effects of a rapidly changing world.

THE ORIGINS OF HATHA YOGA:-
When it was created, it was a total life philosophy that incorporated how we relate to our world, to ourselves and how we can attain inner peace. Most agree that the original writings were Patanjali Maharishi’s yoga sutras, 196 sutras (aphorisms) written in Sanskrit in around 400 AD. Patanjali describes that hatha yoga consists of eight limbs, or disciplines, and referred to it as the eightfold path. Other texts over the years have referred to hatha yoga, but Patanjali’s sutras are the most recognized.
Hatha yoga was brought to America by Swami Vivekananda in 1893 as a spiritual practice. The yogis combined the asanas with other popular exercises in the early 1920s to create a new style of yoga that was more physical than spiritual. the ancient Hatha Yogis were repudiated – that is, they renounced their lives, families, jobs and worldly responsibilities in favour of a life as an ascetic. These people were known as the original Hatha yogis .
Hatha yogis also perform difficult asanas or poses such as submerging themselves in cold water, never sitting down (not even to sleep), standing on one leg, holding their arms in the air for decades, or carrying out the ‘bat penance’ (hanging upside down).
The only difference is that the reason behind doing Hatha Yoga – the main motive was to burning’ off past karma and refining the body and mind, was their practice. Later this type of yoga became popular among the bodybuilders and European gymnastics, and soon Hatha yoga became very popular among larger groups of people.
It made up a part of Sufism, concentrate more upon difficult postures intended to lead towards meditative practices.

Poses like Boat (Navasana), Downward Dog (Adho-Mukha Svanasana), Plank pose (Kumbhakasana), etc., fortify the external obliques, condition the hips, strengthen the paraspinal, and assist in diverse movements.

This results in greater oxygen supply necessary for the optimal functioning of the organs. Pranayama is another yogic way of improving the Oxygen intake for feeling fresh and energetic.

HOW TO DO HATHA YOGA:-
- Stand:- Start by shaking. Walk on a mat and shake your body around.
- Bend forward slowly:- Lie on the mat and place your head on the hands. Raise your knees slightly and then swing your feet back and forth. Now count 1 to 20 in the kidneys.
- Relax:- Rotate the base of your body from left to right. Concentrate on your backbone.
- Move your feet:- Now move your feet and toes moderately in a circular motion.
- Come in Vajrasna position:- Come up and kneel down on your feet. Massage the body from top to bottom. Feel relaxed and rub all your tensions out.
- Earth rubbing:- Draw a circle around you and sit in that circle. Now think about any colour like red, blue, and green, yellow, silver. Which colour does it show?
- Cycling position:- Place your hands on your belly and now turn your legs up and down. Move your head accordingly in opposite directions.
- Sarvangasana:- Point your feet up to the sky. Support yourself from the back with your hands. Go on riding the cycle and see the light around you.
- Form the legged position:- Put your hands together in the form of the heart chakra like in prayer position. Think about the manta “Aum” in your belly and slightly move your toes. Keep on chanting “Aum, Aum, and Aum” Think about the light around you.
- Adopt Shavasana position:- Lie on the mat straight and relax. Put your hands on the ground. Move your feet and toes. Think about Aum and chant. Feel the cosmos. Think as everything is fine. You don’t have to be perfect. Feel relaxed and rest until you feel well. Then slowly come back to the normal position and proceed positively for the day.

This dynamic Hatha flow yoga class involves more vigorous movement than the other Hatha classes and is designed to work up a sweat by moving with the breath to detoxify the body and center the mind. Then, we move into demystifying fear-inducing poses such as arm balances and inversions to break it down and take them to step by step to build a confident practice in a supported and open-minded environment.
This class will enable you to let go after a stressful day, get back into your body and bring you to a more peaceful and centered place by the end. It’s a great way to start the week.
As the instructor will offer easier or more difficult variations for the poses and movements, this class is suitable for all experience levels. Hatha Yoga is known for its tough asanas. Each asana is held on for a longer time for greater impact for as long as it feels comfortable. Hip flexors, chest openers, and inversions share a significant relationship with the time for which each sequence is set. Hatha at all stylistic levels will ensure that there is a relief, stableness, and proper rest, along with a full drawn breath executed.
Hatha can be broken down into two terms: “ha” – signifying the stimulating energy of the sun; and “the”- signifying the calming energy of the moon. Put together, the term Hatha incorporates these two opposing energies to generate the meaning of “force.” In Sanskrit (an ancient Indian language) vinyasa literally means “connection”.Breath is used as an anchor point, guiding the practitioner into focus and balance. This type of yoga is known for it’s a higher level of intensity compared to other techniques. This is driven by the consistent breathing pattern, longer holds on the asanas (postures), and emphasis on core strength and stability. Along with the deep breathing, the added heat provides a good environment for the body to release tension. These conditions also add to the intensity of Hatha Vinyasa Yoga.
