WHAT IS KUNDALINI YOGA?

Kundalini Yoga is a blend of Raja Yoga (the practice of mediation/mental and physical control), Bhakti Yoga (the yogic practice of devotion and chanting), and Shakti Yoga, (for the expression of power and energy).
The main motive of this technique of yoga is to awaken the energy of consciousness, to practice in a way that throws light on our self-imposed limitations, and motivates us to develop our intuitive mind by thinking out of the box.

The kriyas are a specific set of activity that generate strength or intensity, organize that energy and deliver you to a specific energetic state — particularly one of greater awareness.
The kriyas give strength to our nervous system, calming the mind, balancing your glandular system and purifying the body.

I have practiced kriyas that have left me blissed out, high and filled with a sense of relation and satisfaction, and others that have provoked and confronted me to the very core of who I am, both physically and mentally.
This effort is the work required to begin to access the truth of who we are, to create a strong connection to our Soul and therefore our Soul’s work on this planet. It is where we start to make great tramp toward living as an enlightened being.

Here’s What I Wish I’d Known Before My First Kundalini Yoga Class:

Kundalini yoga powerfully combines the full spectrum of yogic tools—mantra (sacred sound), asana (posture), mudra (hand position), bandha (body lock), meditation (mindful focus), and pranayama (breathing technique)—so that it helps you experience the benefits from the very first class. As there are lots of elements to practice, along with a lot of rituals, it can be helpful to know exactly what to expect. Here’s what I wish I’d known before going to my first Kundalini yoga class:

  • You will chant.
    Mantras are mostly used in Kundalini yoga. Kundalini classes start with “tuning in,” which means chanting the mantra Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo. This is Gurmukhi for, “I bend to the creative consciousness. In between these opening and closing mantras, there may be additional mantras used. These may be chanted out loud or used mentally and will vary from class to class, depending on which practices the teacher has selected.
  • The movement is completely different from other yoga classes. I actually wouldn’t describe Kundalini yoga as an outflow—it’s more like periods of intense effort followed by time to relax and notice the effects. After tuning in, there’s a Pranayam (yogic breathing exercise) followed by a sequence of postures called a kriya.
  • There’s a lot of focus on the breath. Kundalini yoga and meditation practices make a point of using the breath to deepen your experience. Conscious breathing can help release strain and anxiousness, both in and out of class.
  • Meditation is built into the class. With all the emphasis on breath and the inward focus between postures, Kundalini yoga is more meditative in nature than other styles of yoga. Because Kundalini practices incorporate more elements than some other types of meditation, such as mantra, movement, and eye focus, the meditations can be more accessible to people new to meditation.
  • You will meet the edge of your comfort zone. While movements(flows) are usually simple enough when you do something repeatedly for even a couple of minutes. The key here is to be kind to yourself and do your best.
  • You will see a lot of white. Your aura is the electromagnetic field that surrounds you and acts as a container for your life force energy and protects you from negativity and illness. Wearing white creates a greater shield—teachers will often also wear a white head covering, such as a hat, scarf, or turban, to contain the energy within the body.
  • There’s a reason Kundalini became popular recently. The ancient teachings of Kundalini yoga were kept mysterious for a very long time. This uplifting practice is now available to everyone thanks to a man named Yogi Bhajan, who brought Kundalini yoga to the West in the late 1960s and began to teach it publicly.
  • Each class is different. It’s important to keep this in mind, especially if you happen to attend a class that has a lot of focus on a specific part of the body, like the core or your arms: There are thousands of different Kundalini yoga and meditation practices that were taught by Yogi Bhajan over the years. While there are certainly postures and movements that show up repeatedly, there’s also a lot of variety.

The best way to understand Kundalini yoga is to experience it for yourself.

KUNDALINI BREATHING:-

I appreciate the comments from those who read essays on my blog but it is important for me not to accept any links, because there is a lot of confusing information available on the web about kundalini yoga, and unless I personally reviewed the information I cannot say whether it is going to help someone or not. But I do not want to be selective so I wish not to use any links here.

Once you learn how to do this then you will be able to do it any time and anywhere if you begin to feel agitated or anxious. Remember the energy is your own life force trying to bring you into a state of openness and peace by clearing and rewiring the flow of your energy. ENERGIZING BREATHING EXERCISES TO CONQUER YOUR DAY:-

All life starts and ends with our breath. However, most people do not breathe properly; quick, shallow upper chest breathing wins the race over slow, deep diaphragm breathing.
Try one of these Kundalini Yoga breath techniques when you wake up and you’ll start your day in a relaxed state, ready to conquer anything! All of the breathing exercises should be done with the eyes closed, sitting in a relaxed cross-legged position.

  • Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing): Use the right pinkie finger to close off the left nostril and exhale slowly through the right nostril. Continue this alternate breathing for a minimum of three minutes, a maximum of 31 minutes. Also, a great option to do right before bed to calm a busy mind.
  • Sitali Pranayam (The Cooling Breath): The act of drawing the air across the tongue and into the mouth is said to have a cooling and calming effect on the nervous system. Inhale slow and steady through the U shaped tongue filling the diaphragm. If this is too difficult, you can also try Sitkari Pranayama which has the same effect. Inhale slowly through the space between the upper and lower teeth, letting the air come in over your tongue as you lift your chin up toward the sky. Both Sitali and Sitkari Pranayama are a particularly good way to wake up if you feel tired in the morning or even during an afternoon slump when you want to improve your focus.
  • One Minute Breath: This exercise soothes fear.20 seconds to inhale, 20 seconds to hold breath, 20 seconds to exhale. To start, inhale slowly, filling the lower abdomen, stomach area, lungs and then finally, the chest. Hold the breath in for 20 seconds and then slowly exhale for 20 seconds. Work your way up to 20-20-20; perhaps start with 10 seconds to inhale, 10 seconds to hold, 10 seconds to exhale (or five seconds is great too!). Continue for a minimum of three minutes.
  • Breath of Fire: Begin in a comfortable seat and sit up tall. Keep the mouth closed through this breathing exercise. Relax the muscles of the stomach. Take a deep inhale through the nose and exhale through the nose. Yoga for Beginners: How to Start a Kundalini Yoga:-

Welcome to Kundalini Yoga. This very precise and wonderful way of healing your heart and transforming your life is now a part of you. You may be a beginner, but you are still a Kundalini yogi.

In a 5,000-year-old science taught to us by Yogi Bhajan, where do you begin? It’s easy to look at such an expansive form of yoga (with over 5,000 meditations and 2,500 kriyas) and get overwhelmed. But you don’t have to. This is all about you, and what’s right for you. With that said, if I had to sit down and talk with a beginner to Kundalini Yoga, this is what I would say.

  • Keep it simple. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by words like So Darshan Chakra Kriya and Rakhe Rakhanhar. Don’t worry. Soon enough, all these words and terms will begin to make sense to you. For now, you don’t need to know everything. Let the mysteriousness of it all be part of its charm. Don’t expect to learn everything all at once. If you get mixed up or messed up, you haven’t failed. You have done very well by giving it a shot! You don’t have to own all the perfect clothes, tie a gorgeous turban, have all the long mantras memorized. and be able to bend into a pretzel at the beginning. (If fact it’s quite all right if you never do these things.) It doesn’t make you a bad yogi or a bad student. In fact, that’s 3HO’s (the mother Kundalini Yoga organizations) motto. Don’t worry if you don’t understand half the words coming out of a teacher’s mouth. Feel the experience that is happening within your body. Pay attention to your breath. Relax your body. Move and flow with the music. For a while, keep it simple.
  • Choose one thing to start.
    Rather than trying to learn everything, you will be better served to learn one thing very well. You can also join Spirit Voyage’s 40 Day Global Sadhanas, which bring together thousands of people all over the globe to practice together. Some of the meditations are a bit more challenging, so you can hold onto them for later, while some are very basic and perfect for beginners. (Remember that basic is still powerful.)
  • Make yourself comfortable. It just won’t do to be uncomfortable in Kundalini Yoga. Make sure you can breathe and move in your clothes. If they make you self conscious, they aren’t right for this practice. True, it is recommended to wear white, but if you aren’t ready for that, it’s OK if you practice in another colour that makes you comfortable. As you deepen your practice, you’ll find that wearing white comes more naturally to you. But comfy is always a priority.
  • Surround yourself with Kundalini Yoga music.
    Having transformational beautiful music playing around you is not only uplifting, it biochemically alters you, triggering the release of happy hormones. Many people find Kundalini Yoga through the angelic voice of Snatam Kaur.
  • Find other practitioners. Consider attending Sat Nam Fest, held three times a year on the west coast, east coast, and in Mexico. Their first course, “The Fundamentals of Kundalini Yoga” begins on April 30, 2017! Someday, you’ll know more about the practice and have experienced it in a different way. But you’ll remember your time as a newbie with great enjoyment and gratitude. Have fun exploring a new world!
